This intervention includes the renovation of the southwest, south, and southeast façades, as well as the addition of a solar pergola on the roof, which complements the building’s energy efficiency.
The new façades of the Maternity Building at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital have been designed with an innovative and integrative approach, both in the use of materials and in the aesthetic and sustainable solutions applied.
From an architectural perspective, the three new façades aim to provide solar protection, reduce the visual impact of the buildings on people through the use of color, and, in the case of the solar façade, generate energy and offer an educational function.
The southwest façade provides a welcoming atmosphere inside, thanks to wood-like tones that add warmth to the spaces intended for families and patients. Externally, the façade maintains chromatic and geometric coherence with others in the complex, achieving a more uniform image of the building as a whole.
The south façade, in darker tones, incorporates photovoltaic panels—a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency that enables the production of clean, autonomous energy for the building.
Finally, the solar pergola on the roof and the use of wood-finish flooring reinforce the goal of creating a pleasant space with a harmonious design that integrates with its surroundings. The intent was to make the roof usable for people, as rooftops are often left as residual spaces in buildings or used solely for installations.
However, the lack of shaded areas hindered its usability. To harness sunlight while creating shaded areas, a solar roof structure was proposed.
The solar roof not only protects from excessive radiation but also adds value to the project’s energy sustainability, enhancing the overall design.
